"Do You Have The Time?"
Nick James
On the 28th February I was talking to a friend of mine, Henry, who told me about
a new project he was considering starting. He was asking my advice.
We'd looked at the financial and logistical implications and then I asked him
this question:
"Are you currently living 24 hours each day?"
"Uh... - Yes Nick of course I am!" he replied.
"OK" I said.
"And I presume that you're spending that time working, sleeping, eating,
spending time with your family and having fun - yes?"
"Yeah - that's right - and your point is?" replied Henry (he's pretty
direct!)
"Well - if you're now going to spend about 5 - 10 hours a week on the
new project - what are you going to give up so that you can do it?"
Is it going to be family time?
Is it going to be sleeping time?
Is it going to be eating time?
Is it going to be some of your current working time?
Is it going to be TV time?
Is it going to be 'having fun' time?
Which 'time' is going to be used differently - if you're already using ALL
of your time?
"Um - I see what you mean!" Henry replied
"And" I continued "Is the impact or result of the time you're
planning to give up worth more (or less) than the impact/result of the new venture?"
He got the point! How about you?
