Get It Proofed
You may think the sales letter is perfect, the order form is just right, and the
webpage works perfectly well, but in your haste to get your product promotion
ready, you may have missed something that will either cost you some money or
make you look pretty stupid.
Real life example - A couple of mistakes I made just this week.
I have literally just finished preparing the new printed sales letter, online
webpages and corresponding order forms for the newly updated DVD version of my
Online Auction's home study course (see http://www.OnlineAuctionProfits.co.uk) Before sending the printed sales letter to the printer and setting up the
website, we spent hours carefully checking all the pages to make sure everything
was correct.
When we finally gave the printer the 'go ahead' and placed an order for 5,000
copies of everything. We then placed the new webpage on our site... we were
certain that everything was exactly as it should have been.
But we were wrong.
Two days after sending the job to print, whilst giving the artwork another
'courteous glance' did I realise that I had made a typo on the order form! I had
written my phone number where the fax number should be displayed!!! ....
Lucky enough for me, when I called the printer to explain my error, it was
just in the nick of time to be fixed. Another hour later and I would have had
5,000 incorrectly printed order forms on my hands.
That mistake could have cost me dearly in lost orders.
One typo this week would have been bad enough, but was another more
embarrassing one to follow, this time we spotted it too late to get it fixed.
You see we also ordered some 'real plastic' membership cards for our new
subscription website about eBay. (www.UKPowerSeller.com) When we received
them we especially pleased with them.... until Nadine spotted a huge spelling
mistake on the back of the card.
Take a look at:
http://www.nick-james.com/public/auction/whoops.cfm to see if you spot it.
Now we will have to re-order the new cards
The Moral of the story - no matter how well you think you proofread and
double-checked your marketing material, it is a good idea to get someone else to
check everything for you. (preferably 2 or 3 people).
Especially when it comes to product descriptions, prices, and order
processing instructions - areas where even small mistakes can cost you a
bundle.
