Have you ever watched someone running a hurdle race? Or see a horse race where they jump over fences? Or marveled (or, God forbid, actually take part) at an army obstacle course?
All those things have one thing in common with your life. They all have lots of things blocking the smooth path.
Almost every job you do, and certainly almost every goal that is worth your while setting, is littered with obstacles that could make you stumble, fall or even turn back.
But you don't want to turn back! You've seen the finishing post - it's in clear view, or it would be if someone hadn't built a brick wall right in front of it!
The single character trait that separates people who get to the winning post is how they deal with obstacles that block their way.
A useful tip that I learned from a life coach some time ago was to physically write your obstacles down and to draw a little picture against each one.
For one thing blocking your road you might draw a fence. For another you might draw a wall. Another might be represented as a nightclub doorman. Another may be a garden gate. YOU select the picture that YOU think is most appropriate and underneath it you write down everything you know about that obstacle in your life.
By giving it a concrete reality and attaching a picture to it, you give yourself the power to deal with it. It is no longer an theoretical problem. You have given it definition and so you can start to see ways to get through it.
There is a children's song that has a chorus about a swamp. It goes:
"Can't go over it; can't go under it; can't go round it ... we gotta go THROUGH it."
It doesn't say 'we gotta give up and go home."
